Garnet comes from the
Latin word, “granatus” which means grain. That is because many garnet
deposits are small grains of red crystals in or on their host rock. The
garnet is a family of gems rather than a single gemstone. We tend to think
of garnets as being red as they are most common, but they actually come in a
rainbow of colors with the exception of blue. Garnets
were named by the ancient Greeks since the color reminded them of the
pomegranate seed.
As with all
gemstones, care should be taken to protect it from scratches, sharp blows,
harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.
The gemstone Garnet is the official
birthstone for January as adopted by the American National Association of
Jewelers in 1912.
