Pewter Measuring Spoon Sets
Deborah and Jim
Chapman's pewter measuring spoon sets are always a
popular gift at Craft Company No.6. Our customers buy them again and again,
for others, and then for themselves! They come with a matching pewter
hanging strip.
It is Deborah and Jim's greatest joy to bring
functional art to everyday life. They were inspired by William Morris,
famous English designer and one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts
movement, who said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be
useful, or believe to be beautiful.” They believe that William would have
loved their functional and beautiful pewter designs. These pieces are are
dishwasher safe and made to be used.
The
Creative Process
Jim and Deborah's work is created using a number of different techniques.
An original design is crafted by hammering, cutting, bending, shaping,
welding, and carving.
The original is then baked in a
pressurized rubber mold. Once it has cooled, channels are cut into the mold
to allow molten pewter to easily flow through the mold.
A ladle of molten pewter (at a
temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit) is poured into the mold while it is
spun at high speed in a centrifugal casting machine. This ensures that all
of the detail of the mold gets filled.
After a short cooling period, the newly
cast piece is removed. Each piece is then carefully sanded before
finishing. The piece is then darkened and the highlight details
hand-polished to create the unique tone of pewter artwork that collectors
love.
